Warnings on oceanic pollution by micro-plastic have been issued at international conferences on environment. Plastic belongs to a category of resin but it is also called synthetic resin because it is mainly made from petroleum as raw material and for the purpose of discriminating it from natural resin such as pine tar and natural rubber.
Compared to natural resin, synthetic resin can be produced in large quantity and at low cost and it is versatile with varying intensity and quality. For that reason, in modern times plastic has become widely used in everyday life and in industries as a vital product.
Plastic waste from all around the world has been transported to developing east Asian countries due to lower recycling cost there than developed countries. And a heap of plastic waste has been dumped and ended up in ocean everyday.
Plastic that has ended up in the ocean will be torn into pieces by sun light and waves without getting decomposed by microbes by rule of nature. Plastic that has been reduced to the size of less than 5mm is called “micro-plastic”. Micro-plastic in such a small size will enter the body of living creatures through the mouth and end up in the human body by the food chain.
What each of us can do to solve this issue is to reduce the use of plastic product such as plastic shopping bag. Let’s use “‘My bag” or “My bottle” instead to make a difference by individual’s effort.
Plastic becomes almost impossible to be recovered once turned into micro-plastic.
